People who have a great attitude make my day, and Sarah is exactly that kind of person. But I don’t need to tell you that, you can see it for yourself.
I used a direct flash with my speedlight here. Very hard direct light gives this a bit of a paparazzi effect. The photo has limited depth, or doesn’t appear very three dimensional. Since it was a true “spur of the moment” moment, I wanted to reflect that, sort of in the same sense of a drive by (camera) shooting. Lots of near blow-outs in the highlights, it’s technically a very messy and “flawed” photograph…which is entirely what I was going for.

Hard light used here. Just the basic on-camera flash. Not always a useful piece of equipment, but naturally very helpful in a pinch. I really wanted to pop the highlights. I got that at the expense of a nasty shadow . Although the knife is centered, the shadow distracts from the focus of the image, and makes it look slightly off balance or off center.
The cutting board adds context but breaks the continuity of the blade in the image, so it’s a love/hate thing.

I am happy with this shot in concept, but there are many ways it can be improved.
I didn’t exactly nail the exposure, so the shot is a bit muddier than I would like.To avoid a complete silhouette I used a speedlight mounted on top of the camera, it was important that I retain detail in the clothing. A silhouette would be suitable if a murkier, more mysterious shot was the goal.
Finally, there are way too many unnecessary elements in the shot. If I redo it, I will remove all furniture from the room, center the floor rug and remove the outlet in post-production. That should provide a much cleaner, more powerful image.
Oh and maybe throw some boots on those feet.

Shine a Light.
Was looking for an object that would provide good contrast against a background (in reference to my notes on the previous shot). Metal is reliable material to produce in B&W.
Highlights set against black shadows create a fairly compelling image.
